NYS Championship Streak Continues

BLAXEIGHT REPORT:  With victories by three teams on June 11, 2021, Section VIII Boys Lacrosse continued an impressive streak of winning state championships that dates back to 2009. With wins by Garden City in Class B, Manhasset in Class C, and Cold Spring Harbor in Class D, Nassau has had a state champion in twelve consecutive seasons (not counting the COVID canceled season of 2020 and 2021 when the state championships were not contested).

The streak began in 2009 with Manhasset in Class C. The Indians, coached by Bill Cherry, repeated in 2010 with a win overing Corning East, 19-6. Farmingdale, led by US Lacrosse Hall of Famer Bob Hartranft, won in Class A in 2011, followed by Garden City in 2012 and 2013. The Chiefs of Massapequa won in 2014 over Section III’s Fayetteville Manlius 15-2, followed by a three-peat in Class C by the Dennis Bonn-led Seahawks of Cold Spring Harbor from 2015 to 2017.

Steve Finell’s Trojans from Garden City won in 2018, followed by Massapequa again in 2019. The Chiefs, coached by Tim Radomski, became Nassau’s first two-time winner from Class A. After a two year-hiatus, Manhasset dominated the state playoffs rounds, winning their first championship since 2010 for coach Keith Cromwell. Garden City and Cold Spring Harbor joined the Indians in 2022, winning their schools eighth and fifth championships, respectively.

With the 2022 victories, Section VIII has now won a total of twenty-eight state championships, one behind co-leaders Section III and XI with twenty-nine each. Only time will tell if the streak will continue in 2023, but with several strong squads returning, no one should count Nassau out!
