Games To Watch For The Week of April 24th-29th
The season is moving along very quickly as we in the last week of April! This week features a mix of important conference games and intriguing non-league matchups.
On Monday, South Side (7-2) visits Massapequa (4-5) in a non-league game that was originally scheduled for later in the week. The Cyclones are coming off a big win over Wantagh on Friday and are stingy defensively, allowing only 5.7 goals per game. Tommy Gentile (67 saves) has been strong in goal all season for South Side. Massapequa will counter with Michael Durin on attack who leads the Chiefs with 32 points. Massapequa is coming off a Conference A win over rival Syosset and a non-league loss at Mt. Sinai and has played one of the most difficult non-league schedules in Nassau this season.
Speaking of Syosset, the Braves (5-4) picked up a come-from-behind win over Cold Spring Harbor Friday night in their annual non-league game. On Monday they face Locust Valley at home in another interesting non-league matchup. The Falcons (7-2) are much improved this season and feature a great scoring combo in Conner Terrell (39 points) and Owen Hickey (36 points). The Braves have their own duo in Adam Giovinco (29 points) and freshman phenom Brody Waxer (33 points).
Tuesday features an important Conference C/D game with Lynbrook traveling to Cold Spring Harbor. The defending NYS Class D champion Seahawks (5-5) have lost three games in a row and will be looking for a bounce-back win. They are strong on the defensive side of the field and have played one of the toughest non-league schedules around. The Owls (5-4) feature Jake Lunati in goal who has made 116 saves so far this season.
It will be the battle of Great Neck bragging rights as South travels to North in Conference B on Wednesday. Both teams have winning records with the Blazers at 4-2 and the Rebels stand at 5-2 after both gaining non-league victories on Saturday. This game could be high-scoring, as Dan Perlman leads North with 40 goals and George Toumbekis leads South with 35 points. The teams split the last two years, with North winning in 2022 and South in 2021.
Another great Wednesday matchup features Wantagh visiting Plainedge. This Conference C game will have major playoff implications and should be very close. The Warriors (7-3) look to get back on track after losing to South Side last Friday, while the Red Devils (8-1) have won eight games in a row after a season-opening loss to Harborfields. Both teams are high scoring but also feature strong goaltending. Plainedge's Chris Santacroce (91 saves) and Kyle Conklin (127 saves) of Wantagh have both been excellent this season.
Friday will see Wantagh back in action at Port Washington (5-3). Both teams have a short turn-around as the Vikings will play Baldwin on Wedneday in a Conference A matchup. Port lost to Farmingdale and beat MacArthur last week and is potent offensively (12.4 goals per game) behind Luke Meyer (34 points) and two-way midfielder John McCarthy. The faceoff battle between John Papagalis of Port and Will Greaves of Wantagh should be a good one.
The final week in April saves the best for last. On Saturday, Manhasset will travel to Garden City for their annual battle, more commonly know as "The Woodstick Classic." Game time is set for 4:00 pm and we will have an article later in the week detailing this matchup and will include a complete history of the game and some of the greatest performances,
