Massapequa Kings of NYS Class A Lacrosse

Massapequa returned to the NYS Class A Finals for the first time since winning in 2019 and secured their 3rd  championship with a 19-9 win over West Genesee of Section III.  The Wildcats also played in last year’s final falling to Half Hollow Hills; the last win for the Wildcats was in 2008.  The first three quarters remained close and competitive before the Chiefs scored 10 of the last 11 goals to pull ahead for good.  Massapequa was led by Rocco Spallina (4g-3a) and Nolan Wieczorek (3g-3a).  Jeff Mercer (3g-2a) was the top offensive threat for West Genesee.

Mercer scored the opening goal with an unassisted goal after grabbing a loose ball directly on the crease.  The Chiefs responded only six seconds later with a fast-break goal by Spallina with an assist from Tyler Byrnes.  The Wildcats kept up the pressure with three more goals in the span of two minutes.  Riley Mcaldon, Hunter Cole and Mercer scored to give West Genesee the 4-1 lead with 5:10 left in the first quarter.  Wieczorek scored his first goal a minute later with a  drive from behind the cage.  Luke Lockwood scored the next goal off a feed from Mercer with 3:14 left on the clock in the first quarter.  The  Wildcats led 5-2.  Before the end of the first quarter, the Chiefs scored three more goals to tie the game at 5-5 after 12 minutes.  Jake Byrnes scored two with Casey Gilchrist scored the third.  Massapequa kept up the pressure going into the second with another three goals (six total unanswered goals spanning a 12 minute period between the first and second quarters).  Wieczorek and Spallina teams up on a cross-crease pass from Wieczorek to Spallina followed with single drives by Braden Tucker (from behind the cage) and Dylan Milio (from the top of the restraining line).  The Chiefs led 8-5 with 3:07 left in the first half.  Both teams added one more goal in the final 90 seconds of the first half with Mercer scoring off another ground ball on the crease and Wieczorek scoring on an extra man situation for Massapequa.  Going into halftime the Chiefs led 9-6.

West Genesee scored back to back goals to open the second half and pull within one goal.  The first was a fast-break goal with Mercer assisting Lockwood and the second was a feed from behind the net by Christopher Shoults to Riley Mcaldon.  Even though the Wildcats had pulled within one goal, the Chiefs began their scoring stretch.  Over the final 18 minutes they added another 10 goals, while only allowing a single goal from the Wildcats.  The goals were a solid spread of assisted feeds and single-player drives to the goal.  The lone West Genesee goal came with 5:17 left in the fourth quarter.  Liam Kelly started with the ball on the sideline off a dead ball and drove straight to the goal to score the 9th goal for the Wildcats.  After that goal, Massapequa added two more goals with long stick Justin Farrell scoring off a fast-break give and go to Spallina.  The final goal with also a Spallina assist, this time to Wieczorek who was cutting across the crease and finished with a behind the back shot into the upper net.

The pain of getting hit with a 90 mph shot? Nothing compared to the pain of missing it.
