Manhasset Wins NYS Class B Title

Manhasset won their first Class B Championship Title since 1995 this afternoon with a 10-7 win over Section V’s Victor.  The Indians were back to back Champions in 2022 and 2023 in Class C, but had not made it back to the championship game since.  For Victor, this was their 8th visit to the championship game in the last decade.  They were coming into the match-up looking for their first win since 2019 after losses to South Side and Garden City in their last two visits.
The game was close for the majority of the contest before Manhasset was able to score four straight goals with four minutes left in the game to pull ahead for good.  A key factor in the contest was the faceoff X.  Manhasset's Mikery Beschel finished 14 of 21 on the day, including winning 4 of 7 against Victor All-American Eli Ricci. Ricci was forced out of the contest with an injury and long stick Oliver Kowal took over at the X for the Blue Devils.  In the fourth quarter, the Indians won six of eight draws to give them significantly more offensive chances.

Victor started off the game strong with Matthew Herendeen scoring less than a minute into the game.  Four minutes later and the Blue Devils got their second goal with Nathan Terrance threading an inside pass to Ricci in the middle of the defense.  The first Manhasset goal was scored by Philip Palumbo with a dodge into the middle before creating space and firing a side-arm shot into the back of the net.  The Blue Devils led 2-1 at the end of the first quarter.  The second quarter opened with the third Blue Devil’s goal.  Gage Hay drove to the cage and pulled a double team from the defense before dropping the ball off to Jackson Mead.  Mead’s goal was the last for the Blue Devils for over 12 minutes, while the Indians started a four goal streak spanning the rest of the second quarter and into the early third quarter.  Freshman Tommy Kasselakis, who finished with a team leading three goals and an assist, scored his first goal with an unassisted dodge from the top of the restraining line with 7:25 left in the half.  The first tie of the game came at 3-3 with Marco Petruccelli scoring with a drive down the left side of the restraining line.  Although victor forced two more ties, they never lead again.  The Indians added one more goal before halftime with Kasselakis finding Tommy Leder open on the crease.  Manhasset led 4-3 going into halftime.

The third quarter opened with another Manhasset goal.  Petruccelli scored his second with a mid range shot.  Less than thirty seconds later, Victor responded with Lincoln Snyder feeding Colin Wheeler.  With one goal for each team in the third, Manhasset held the one goal lead (5-4) going into the final quarter.  Victor forced the second tie of the game with Wheeler assisting Herendeen during a man-up attempt.  Just over a minute later, Manhasset scored again with an outside shot from Peter Weston from the left side.  It took four minutes, but Victor forced their third, and final, tie of the game with an unassisted goal from Hay with 5:09 left in the game.  Manhasset kept up the consistent pressure and added another four goals over the next four minutes.  Mondiello scored first with a drive from the top of the restraining line, followed by back to back unassisted goals from Kasselakis.  Thirty seconds after his second goal, Weston added his second goal an another unassisted score.  The Indians led 10-6 with 1:02 left on the clock.  Victor added one more (Hay – unassisted) before time expired, but the Indians held on to secure their NYS Class B Title.
