Saturday: Manhasset Wins the 139th Woodstick Classic In Overtime

On the last Saturday in April, playing in the rain was the order of the day. Despit the poor conditions, there were several great games and an overtime thriller in the 139th Woodstick Classic. 

Manhasset 9, Garden City 8, OT: Cal Girard won the overtime faceoff and seconds later Jack Peterson scored unassisted to win the 139th Woodstick Classic for Manhasset (10-0). The Indians, the highest ranked public school team in every national scholastic poll, trailed 4-0 in the first quarter and 5-2 to the host Trojans at halftime. Manhasset railled in the third behind Liam Connors (3g) and Matt Carguilo (3g) and led 8-6 in the fourth quarter. Goals by Jack Archer and Stevie Finnell late in the game tied the score at 8, setting the stage for Peterson's overtime heroics. Duke commit Girard finished 19-19 at the faceoff X for Manhasset and Matt Im made 8 saves to earn the win.  [ BOX SCORE] 

Tappan Zee 19, Hicksville 6: James Kelly scored four goals and had an assist for Hicksville (4-6) in a non-league loss to Tappan Zee (8-3) of Section I (Westchester). Peter Agapito won 19 of 29 faceoffs for the Comets.  [ BOX SCORE] 

Freeport 12, Lawrence 11: Caleb Mann (5g-2a), Matthew Drayton (3g-3a), and Alec Bastien (3a) were the high scorers for Freeport (8-4) in a non-league win over Lawrence (5-8). Quinn Kerins had ten points (6g-4a),  Kody Kirchner scored four goals, and Amari Elliott made 20 saves for the Golden Tornadoes.  [ BOX SCORE] 

Valley Stream 13, West Hempstead 9: Training 7-1 in the second quarter, Valley Stream (3-9) rallied by outscoring West Hempstead 12-2 over the remainder of the game to secure the non-league win. Stephen Pulsifer scored seven goals and Ian Hess had four goals and six assists for Valley Stream. Gavin Lee led the Rams (3-7) with two goals and three assists, and goaltender Dan Clark made 23 saves in the loss.   [ BOX SCORE] 

North Shore 11, Locust Valley 10, OT: Cole Gibstein scored the game winner in overtime for North Shore (5-6) in Conference C/D. Matthew D"Aversa led the Vikings with seven goals, Jack Kaufman had 5 assists, and Gibstein won 16 of 23 faceoffs. Harrison Blair scored three goals for the Falcons (7-4) and Conner Terrell scored twice and added two assists. [ BOX SCORE] 

Northport 13, Massapequa 8:  Will Birney scored three goals for Massapequa (6-6) in a non-league loss to Northport (10-2) in the Louis J. Acompora Memorial Jamboree. Michael Durnin and Patrick Radomski each added two goals for the Chiefs.  [ BOX SCORE] 

Farmingdale 7, Mamaroneck 5: Brendan O'Keefe led all scorers with four assists for Farmingdale (8-3) in a non-league win over Mamaroneck (7-4) of Section I (Westchester). Mike Ippoliti made ten saves and CJ Mangio won 11 of 14 faceoffs for the Dalers.  [ BOX SCORE]
