Games to Watch For The Week of May 8th
Key conference matchups take center stage this week and conclude with a traditional non-conference game that supports a great cause.
Carey at Cold Spring Harbor, Tuesday May 9th, 7:00 pm: The "Battle of the Seahawks" should be a good one. Carey (11-2) has been a bit of a suprise in Conference C/D and finishes the season with three tough opponents in Cold Spring Harbor, Island Trees, and Plainedge. Matt Metzger leads Carey with 31 goals and 48 points. The Seahawks of the North are coming off a tough 7-5 non-conference loss to South Side. CSH (7-6) will be a force in the NYS Class D tournament and are the defending champions. This one could be a low-scoring, defensive battle.
Island Trees at Bethpage, Tuesday May 9th, 7:00 pm: The Bulldogs are 1-4 in Conference C/D and need wins to secure a playoff birth, while Bethpage (6-7) seems to be playing their best lacrosse at the right time-just before the playoffs. Junior Jake Kelly has made 167 saves in net for the Golden Eagles. Island Trees (7-5) counters with Kian McCoy, who leads the team with 33 goals and 46 points.
Calhoun at South Side, Wednesday, May 10th, 6:00 pm: This game could determine the #2 seed for the playoffs in Class B. Calhoun (11-2) has a potent offense led by LIU-bound senior Jake Lewis (40g-35a-75pts). Peter Thomann (UNC) is a high-energy LSM/D who can play defense and score in transition. South Side (9-4) is strong defensively (6 goals allowed per game) with goalie Tommy Gentile (Boston University) and can control tempo with Michael Melkonian (Cornell) facing off (70.9%, 166 wins).
Manhasset at Wantagh, Thursday, May 11th, 5:00 pm: Undefeated and nationally ranked Manhasset (12-0) travels to Wantagh (9-4) for a battle of Conference C/D heavyweights. The Warriors, who play Lynbrook on May 9th before facing the Indians, will lean on Antony Tsakos (LIU) offensively and will need a strong game from goaltender Kyle Conklin (169 saves) to hang with powerful Manhasset, who is averaging just under 12 goals per game playing a tough non-league schedule. Colgate commit Liam Connor (28-15-43) controls the offense for the Indians along with do-it-all midfielder Jack Petersen (Harvard).
Syosset at Port Washington, Friday, May 12th, 5:00 pm: This Conference A game is a rematch of the 2022 Class A Nassau championship won by the Vikings. Both teams seem to be playing their best lacrosse right now and both teams feature talented offensive players. Port Washington (8-4) has Luke Meyer (37-14-51) to lean on, a Richmond commit who can play both attack and midfield. Syosset (9-5) counters with freshman phenom Brody Waxer (39-17-56) and goalie Zach Finkelstein (113 saves).
Bethpage at Mineola, Saturday, May 13th, 11:00 am: Mineola starts the week at 7-6 and will play Plainedge before taking on Bethpage, who will be coming off a game of their own against Island Trees. Mineola needs a few wins to solidify a playoff birth and features Michigan commit Tommy Renner (31 goals) and junior Jack McCormack (45-25-70).
Farmingdale at Massapequa, Saturday May 13th, 12:00 pm: One of the best rivaries in Nassau renews with the Dalers (10-3) traveling to Massapequa (6-7). The Chiefs have played one of the toughest schedules in all of New York and have some great playmakers in Siena bound Patrick Radomski (30 goals) and Aidan Christie (24 assists), both seniors. Chris Bergersen (Mercy) scored the game winner against Syosset last week in OT for Farmingdale and CJ Mangio is one of the better faceoff midfielders in Nassau (129 wins, 63.5%).
Manhasset at Chaminade, Saturday, May 13th, 2:00 pm: The Indians finish the week with their annual Regs Rock "Lacrosse Day For Heroes" game against Chaminade (9-3). Emotions will run high in this one, and Manhasset will look to remain unbeaten against a strong Flyers squad that plays rival St. Anthony's on May 10th. With faceoff man extraordinare Cal Girard (Duke) the Indians will look to control possessions and tempo.
