Garden City Wins 3rd Straight Class B Championship
Carson Kraus scored the winning goal off a feed from Stevie Finnell with 1:48 left to play to lead Garden City (15-4) over a tough Calhoun squad, 7-6, in the Nassau Class B Championship game. For the Trojans it is their third consecutive Class B championship and 28th overall Nassau championship in school history.
Calhoun (15-4), appearing in their second consecutive Nassau Class B championship, lead at the half, 4-3, thanks to two early second quarter unassisted goals by Jake Lewis and Jayden Finkelstein. Finnell tied the game for Garden City at the 9:44 mark of the third quarter, and the Trojans led twice in the second half, only to see unassisted goals by Lewis tie the game late in the third and at the 5:22 mark of the fourth quarter.
Denis Fargione made nine saves in goal for Garden City and was named championship game MVP for his efforts. Lewis led all scorers with three goals for the Colts and teammate Ryan Menghi won 13 of 17 faceoffs. Finnell had two goals and the gamewinning assist for the Trojans, and both James Paisley and Andrew Ottomanelli each had two goals for the winners.
Garden City will play Suffolk champion West Islip (13-5) on Saturday in the Long Island Class B Championship game at Stony Brook University at 5:30 pm.
