A Nassau Sweep At The Long Island Championships
All four Nassau County teams won their respective classifications yesterday at the 2023 Long Island Lacrosse Championships held at Stony Brook University. The Long Island Championships are the quarterfinal round of the New York State Boys Lacrosse Tournament that culminates next Saturday at Hofstra University with the crowning of state champions in four classifications-A, B, C, and D. The complete NYS brackets can be found on the NYSPHSAA website.
In three of the four games yesterday, the Nassau entrant trailed at some point in the game and rallied for the win. The first game of the day, in Class C, saw Manhasset (19-1), trailing Shoreham-Wading River by one at halftime and the Indians used a huge fourth quarter to secure the win. Faceoff midfielder won 17 of 20 draws, including all in the pivotal fourth. Jack Petersen paced Manhasset with three goals and an assist, and Aidan Haggerty and Liam Connor added two goals apiece as well. It was Manhasset's second straight LIC win and their fifteenth overall in school history. They will play Rye (13-7) from Section I on Wednesday at 5:30 pm at SUNY Albany.
Farmingdale (17-3) also trailed by a goal at halftime, 2-1, to two-time Long Island Champion Northport (16-4). Goaltender Mike Ippoliti had a strong performance in goal with 14 saves, and the Dalers scored four straight goals to take command of the game in the fourth. A late goal by Northport LSM Andrew Miller, his second of the game, closed out the scoring in the contest as Farmingdale was able to hold the ball for the final minutes for the win. Jake Norton scored twice and Sal Posillico added a critical third quarter goal for the Dalers. It was Farmingdale's fourth LIC in school history and they will play Scarsdale (14-6) of Section I on Wednesday at 3:00 pm at SUNY Albany.
In the last game of the day, Garden City trailed 2-1 at the end of the first quarter against West Islip (13-6). A dominant 5-0 second quarter by the Trojans (16-4) proved to be the difference in the game, as the Lions were unable to mount a second half comeback. Jack Archer led Garden City with two goals and two assists, and Andrew Ottomanelli scored three goals for the winners. For Garden City, the victory was the Nassau-record 19th LIC in school history, and was their third in a row, all in Class B. They will play Niskayuna (18-2) of Section II at 6:30 pm on Wednesday at SUNY Albany.
Cold Spring Harbor (12-6) led from start to finish in their 8-2 Class D victory over Mattituck/Greenport (7-11). The Seahawks had a strong defensive performance that enabled them to have a 4-0 halftime advantage. Roy Testa and Hayden Calabretta each had two goals for the winners, and Carson Kirchner made six saves and only allowed one goal. It is the sixth LIC victory in school history and their second straight in Class D. They advance to face Pleasantville (19-1) from Section I on Wednesday at SUNY Albany at 4:00 pm.
