Week One Review
Let's review what happened during the first week of the 2025 season in case you missed any of it!
BLAXEIGHT TEAMS OF THE WEEK
1. Port Washington Vikings
Port won three games this under first-year head coach Glenn Lavey. All the wins came against Suffolk County opponents- Islip, Sayvile, and Harborfields. Goaltender Max Eynon was huge in all three wins, as was his brother Harry who plays attack, and Tommy McCarvill who scored four goals in the Sayville win.
2. Wantagh Warriors
The defending Nassau Class C champs picked up right where they left off last season with wins over Kellenberg and East Islip. The Warriors offense under head coach James Polo was clicking to the tune of 34 goals in those wins, the most scored this week by any Nassau teams. The Warriors play a killer schedule, so only time will tell if they can continue their hot streak!
3. Locust Valley Falcons
Locust Valley suffered through a 1-15 season a year ago, so a 2-0 start is a huge step in he right direction for head coach Tom Duggan and the Falcons. Freshman goaltender Grayson Iannotti had a great week stopping 73% of the shots he faced including a shutout in the opener against Malverne-East Rockaway. Attackman Owen Pye totaled ten points as the leader of the Falcons attack.
BLAX EIGHT PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
1. Max Eynon, Port Washington
Max totaled 35 saves in 3 wins this week for the Vikings, stopping 70% of the shots he faced, include 18 against Sayville.
2. Dylan Martini, Wantagh (pictured right)
The senior sniper led Nassau with 11 goals this week, including seven against Kellenberg.
3. Troy Madden, Herricks
Troy totaled a Nassau-best 19 points in week one, with nine goals and ten assists. He now has 190 career points.
4. Luke Waxer, Bethpage (pictured left)
The junior defender led Bethpage to a shutout of Walt Whitman. His stat line for the week read: 2 assists, 13 ground balls, and 8 caused turnovers.
5. Michael Jannotte, Massapequa
Michael made 19 saves in the opening day victory over South Side and made four more in an easy for the Chiefs over Mepham.
Honorable Mention: Nolan Wieczorek, Massapequa, Caden Cullen, MacArthur, Ethan Goldberg, Roslyn.
BLAX EIGHT GAMES TO WATCH THIS WEEK
1. Cold Spring Harbor at Manhasset, Monday, March 31st, 7:00 pm
One of the best games in Nassau every year. The Indians lead the all-time series 62-26 but over the last ten games each powerhouse has won five times.
2. Oceanside at Locust Valley, Tuesday, April 1st, 5:00 pm
Both teams have won their opening week games. Something will have to give here. Oceanside looks to be the favorite but will have to travel north to Locust Valley.
3. Bethpage at Calhoun, Wednesday, April 2nd, 5:00 pm
Bethpage appears to be much improved this season, while Calhoun lost their opener to Lynbrook but rallied to rout Hewlett later in the week. Bethpage has won 17 of the 27 games in this series but Calhoun has won last five in a row dating to 2019.
4. Massapequa at Carey, Friday, April 4th, 5:00 pm
Two teams that seem to have legitimate championship hopes meet in a League 1 contest. The Chiefs have dominated this matchup that was an annual affair from 2006 to 2022, having won 17 of the 19 all-time matchups.
5. Wantagh at Port Washington, Friday April 4th, 6:00 pm
A League 1 matchup between two teams that win in different ways. Class A Port is strong defensively and in the goal, while the defending Class C champion Warriors are a scoring machine. The Vikings have not beaten Wantagh since 1982.
6. Herricks at Locust Valley, Saturday April 5th, 5:00 pm
Herricks won their first two games and Locust Valley will be playing their second game in a row against a Class A program. The schools have played infrequently over the years, with Locust Valley having won three of the four prior meetings.
7. Severn (MD) vs. Garden City, Sunday, April 6th, 1:00 pm at St. Joseph's (PA)
A great interstate game between Severn from the MIAA against one of Long Island's best in Garden City. The two programs have never met, and the Admirals are 3-3 and will play McDonough and Calvert Hall this week before venturing north to play at a neutral site. The Trojans always play a killer non-league schedule under coach Steve Finnell and this year is no different.
