Game of the Day: Garden City 12, Wantagh 9
Garden City laid claim to the top team in Nassau so far this year with a 12-9 victory over defending Class C champion Wantagh. The Warriors entered the game at 3-0 but had no answer at the faceoff X for Garden City senior Luke Cascadden, a Navy commit who won 23 of 26 draws, including all 12 in the second half.
The Trojans came out hot and took an early 3-0 lead, but Wantagh answered with six consecutive goals between the first and second quarters. Devin Paccione scored twice and added an assist, and Joe Nicholson had two others (he finished the game with four goals and an assist) for the Warriors (3-1). Lehigh commit Charlie Koester scored consecutive goals in the final 1:30 of the half to close the gap for Garden City.
Paccione scored his third goal unassisted at the 7:20 mark of the third quarter to give Wantagh a two goal lead at 7-5. But Garden City scored the next five goals, the last by Blake Cascadden off another faceoff win by his twin brother Luke to start the fourth quarter. Nicholson answered with a extra-man goal on a pass from Carter Loughman but Anthony Asaro (1g, 3a) and Koester scored two of the last three goals of the game for the Trojans.
Koester finished as the game's high scorer with five goals and an assist and sophomore Brayden Robertiello added two goals and an assist for Garden City. The victory was the 11th straight for Garden City over Wantagh dating back to 2010. [ BOX SCORE]
