MANHASSET UPSETS GARDEN CITY TO WIN CLASS B TITLE

Manhasset upset top ranked and #1 seeded Garden City to win the Nassau Class B championship, 9-8. Tommy Leder scored the winning goal with five seconds left in overtime on a pass from William Mondiello to win it for 'Set. Game MVP freshman Tommy Kasselakis had two goals and two assists to lead Manhasset, while senior Connor Sheerin scored three goals and added an assist.
The two teams had played just over a month ago, with Garden City taking the win in the 144th Woodstick Classic, played at Manhasset. This game was different, as Leder scored early in the first quarter to give Manhasset the early 1-0 lead. But Garden City scored four of the next five goals to take a 4-2 lead. Kasselakis scored to bring Manhasset within one at the end of the first quarter. His goal seemed to energize Manhasset, who led 5-4 at half thanks to a goal by Peter Weston.
Manhasset never trailed in the second half. James DeBusschere's goal on a pass from Charlie Koester tied the game at 6 early in the fourth. Manhasset scored consecutive goals late in the fourth to take an 8-6 lead. Kasselakis had a hand in both goals, assisting on one and hammering the other himself from the lefty wing. The Trojans tied the game with 1:08 left as Koester scored off a fast break faceoff win by Brayden Robertiello setting the stage for the overtime heroics by Leder.
Strong goaltender by freshman Andrew Limberg (11 saves) offset the faceoff advantage that Robertiello (20 of 21 faceoffs) gave the Trojans. DeBusschere led Garden City with three goals and Charlie Koester led all scorers with three goals and two assists. Garden City finished the season at 17-2. Manhasset (15-4) will face Suffolk champion Smithtown East in the Class B Long Island Championship on Saturday, June 6th at Stony Brook. Game time is 10:00 am.
