Wednesday - Massapequa 10, Syosset 8
A great rivalry was renwed today with a matchup between traditional Class A powers, Massapequa and Syosset. With the development of the Power League this season, a game normally played in early May took place in late March but did not disappoint in terms of intensity and big plays.
Syosset led the game early in the second quarter, 3-2, thanks to two goals from senior David Disque (Johns Hopkins). The Chiefs went on a six goal run to close out the first half that proved to be the difference in the game. The run started with a goal off a failed Syosset clear by Nolan Wieczoreck off a pass from Rocco Spallina. This freshman attack combo will no doubt be heard from a lot over the next four years. The run finished with a Michael Weigand goal from Wieczorek and gave Massapequa an 8-3 halftime advantage.
But the Braves would not go away as Disque scored three consecutive third quarter goals to close the Massapequa lead to 8-6 at the end of the third quarter. His third of the quarter and fifth of the game was a wild play in which he might have dodged all the Chief defenders on the way to the goal. In the fourth, midfielder Joe Fazio scored an unassisted goal (his second of the game) on an alley dodge that proved to be the game-winner. Syosset scored two of the last three goals, one by Brody Waxer and another by Owen Azevedo (from Disque). Sandwiched between those tallies was an unassisted goal from Wieczorek, who finished with two goals and two assists. Chiefs goaltender, senior Michael Jannotte (12 saves), made a couple of stops down the stretch to shut the door and preserve the 10-8 win for Massapequa. Joey Diesso led Massapequa with three goals and an assist.
Since 2010, the teams have met 24 times, with each team earning 12 victories. With the win, Massapequa improves to 2-2 and Syosset falls to 0-3. [ BOX SCORE]
