Week 1 Review

EDITOR'S NOTE: This weekly summary touches on some of the games played in the recent past and highlights some games of interest in the current week. For more in-depth coverage, click on the DAY OF THE WEEK for more coverage for that day, including box scores, articles, and galleries.

There were thirty-nine games played since the start of games on March 20th. At the moment there are forty-seven out of county games scheduled and thirteen have been played. Nassau County teams have won six (46%).

Looking Back

On Monday the 2023 season opened with a win for first year Head Coach Pat Gorman as Bethpage scored ten goals in the first half against visiting Herricks.

On Wednesday, there were seven games played with Wheatley/Carle Place scoring four goals in the fourth quarter, including the game winner by Blake Lyons with 2:11 left to give the Wildfrogs their opening day win over Baldwin. Floral Park used three goals in the last stanza to take the lead and then beat Herricks 8-6. Bethpage freshman midfielder James Lipetri scored his first Varsity goal and Ryan Dupre added 2g-1a for the Golden Eagles (2-0). Also winning today were Roslyn, Island Trees, Calhoun, and Bellmore JFK.

On Thursday, South Side took a 4-2 lead at the halftime break and took the 9-5 victory over Syosset. Bryant-bound junior attackman Owen West led the scoring with 3 goals for the Cyclones. Clarke held off an eight-goal surge by Freeport to take a 13-12 win on the road. Suffolk Class C squad Bayport-Blue Point took off in the last quarter with three goals in their 9-8 win at Wantagh. Other winners included Harborfields over Plainedge, Lawrence besting Sewanhaka, and Long Beach over Mineola.

On Friday, there were fifteen games. Two close games saw Seaford dropping a one-goal game to Half Hallow Hills and Bellmore JFK had a 10-8 win against Plainview JFK. Lynbrook had a 6-2 lead at the halftime break, but Oceanside came back with four unanswered goals in the third quarter. Mike Hendrickson (1g) scored the tying goal for Lynbrook and Max Dantona (5g-1a) scored the game winning goal giving Bill Luzzi his first Varsity win as the new head coach at Lynbrook. Cold Spring Harbor won 8-7 in a very close game against Huntington with Hayden Calabretta scoring the winner for the Seahawks in the last minute of play. In games that involved non-Nassau teams, Massapequa lost to St. Thomas Aquinas of Florida, 12-11 in overtime.

Saturday was a cold, rainy day, but ten games were played.  Defending Class A champion Port Washington dropped their first game to Northport, 15-7, and Class A pre-season favorite Massapequa was beaten by Bayport-Blue Point 16-7.  Oyster Bay had a rare shutout win over Uniondale, 11-0, with Jake Panetta and Tyler Rosasco earning the credit in goal.

Looking Ahead

This week slate of games features some exciting matchups:
Port Washington at South Side (Monday, March 27, 5:00 pm): South Side opened their season with a great win over traditional Class A power Syosset, and the Cyclones look to continue their winning ways against defending Class A champions Port Washington (0-1).
Farmingdale at Cold Spring Harbor (Tuesday, March 28, 7:00 pm): This is the first matchup of traditionally strong programs since 1991. The defending NYS Class D Champion Seahawks began their title defense with an 8-7 come-from-behind win over Huntington on Friday.
Garden City at Syosset (Wednesday, March 29, 5:00 pm): Always a great game between two top programs. This year, both teams lost their opening games last week and look to rebound with a victory.
Island Trees at Calhoun (Thursday, March 30, 5:00 pm): The Bulldogs have some young talent and are looking to make some noise this spring. Calhoun lost in the Class B final last year and return a top longstick in Peter Thomann.
MacArthur at Oceanside (Friday, March 31, 7:00 pm): Last's year game was a barnburner won by the Sailors 14-13. The matchup of MacArthur d-man Michael Cassano against Oceanside's Nicky Cairo will be worth the price of admission.

Check out the times and the whole list on the games page.
